Golf Safety Tips

Tips & Advice No Comments »

Golf is a sport played outdoors around groups of people all trying to hit a small hard ball around a golf course. These factors make it important to keep safety in mind – weather-related and otherwise – at all times.

Proper conditioning, hydration, and golf techniques are key to building the foundation for a safe game. Here are some tips to keep yourself, and others, injury free:

Engage in warm-up activities prior to your game. Before swinging your club, make sure the area around you is clear of others. Be careful after hitting the ball not to throw your club as you could injure someone. Be careful about standing in front of or on the side of a person who is attempting to hit the ball, as you could be injured by the ball or by the rebounding of the ball from the trees, signs, etc. You are vulnerable at all times, be aware of who is playing around you. Do not hit the ball until proper distance is available between groups of golfers.

Weather-wise, if you start to see rain clouds, hear thunder or see lightning in the distance, get off the course right away. Lightning is famous for striking the open, inviting field of the golf course, or the trees surrounding it. A golf cart won’t protect you from lightning strikes or a heavy downpour. Don’t take any chances – safety first!

Avoiding Injuries While Playing Golf

Fitness No Comments »

While golf is not the contact sport that football or basketball may be, injuries while playing golf can occur. Most injuries are mild and easy to treat, but, if you want to avoid injuries altogether, this article will give you some tips to do just that.

First, be in pretty good shape before you begin. Walking or running will help increase your cardiovascular stamina. If you don’t rent a cart on the course, you will be walking, so you should be prepared and fit enough to make it all 18 holes.

Stretch before and after playing. You probably won’t see many golfers doing this, as the physical exertion that golf brings is underestimated. But just as you would stretch before running or biking, you should do the same before golfing. Stretching warms up the muscles and ligaments, and can mean the difference between hurt or sore muscles tomorrow.

Take golf lessons to learn the proper stance and swing. If you don’t know the best posture to use when playing, you run the risk of pulling a muscle or injuring your back. A qualified instructor will show you the exact way to tee off and move when swinging so you lessen that risk, and improve your shot at the same time!

Golf is known as a sport that is good for your mind and your health – so be sure to play it in a way that won’t injure you today or later down the road!

Good Posture for a Good Golf Game

Fitness 1 Comment »

Take a quick look at the way you are sitting right now – are you sitting up straight with your neck high? Chances are the answer is ‘no’. While our parents drilled into us the importance of good posture, most of us never heeded their advice.

Good posture is the foundation for a good golf game. Those who have bad posture while sitting or walking run the risk of a bad stance while playing golf. Many doctors note that bad posture is the reason for many of the sports injuries they see every day. You can improve your game off the course by focusing on the way you stand, walk and sit in ‘real-life’.

Golf instructors all have different philosophies about how to teach the golf swing. But one thing is consistent; poor posture while swinging is a major factor in inconsistent golf play. You simply can’t have bad posture and expect to have a good golf game.

To improve your posture, keep it top of mind. When you are seated, always slide your bottom back in the chair until it touches the back of the seat. Your upper back should rest against the seat back and your feet should be flat on the floor. In your car, sit with this perfect posture, and then and only then, adjust your seat to reach the foot pedals.

Posture will, no doubt, be stressed as a fundamental by your instructors, as if there is one fundamental to golfing success, it is your posture.

Fitness Training for Golfers

Fitness 1 Comment »

Tiger Woods has revolutionized the game of golf in many ways. Perhaps one of the biggest changes he introduced is an emphasis on physical fitness to prepare for a game of golf. If you look back at golfers of old, not many look like they had a regular fitness routine. Some didn’t even look like they were fit enough to walk the 18-hole distance! The results of Tiger’s fitness regimen are evident. Needless to say, many other golfers, professional and amateur alike, have realized the importance of physical fitness and its relation to playing a good round of golf.

The golf swing requires strength and a good amount of flexibility. Not matter what your current physical condition, you will benefit from regular exercise, including strength training. Your swing will improve as you focus on arm and back muscles during your daily workout.

Flexibility, firmness and power are all improved by exercising for golf. As you develop your own routine, think about the specific muscle groups and body parts that are used to achieve a great swing, and concentrate on those functional exercises for golf.

Do you have to be fit to play good golf? Well, the answer is ‘no’. Many golfers are excellent and haven’t been to the gym in years. However, if you want to improve your game and keep up, or beat, the best, the answer is definitely ‘yes’!

Buying the Right Putter for Your Game

Equipment, Tips & Advice No Comments »

There are many decisions that golfers make on their own during play, but perhaps one of the most personal decision when selecting equipment is which putter to buy. To any serious golfer, the putter is perhaps the most important. Every golfer’s success depends on how well he or she can sink the putt, and many rely on their putter to improve their ability.

As with all golf equipment, there are a wide variety of putters to choose from. All major golf equipment manufacturers offer a selection that will stun and confuse you. Picking the right putter can feel overwhelming, but the best advice is – try as many as you can before you decide. Unlike other clubs, a putter is all about how it feels in your hands and when you putt.

There are three types of putters – conventional, belly and long. If you are able to play well with a conventional putter, that’s your best bet. It’s a reliable club and one that, unless you have circumstances warranting the other types, you should stick with for the most consistent putting game. Belly or long putters are usually for someone who needs more room for their hands or grip. Also, golfers who have back problems usually do better with a long putter

When looking at the head of the putter, unless you are a professional you should consider the face-balanced mallet or heal-toe weighted putter. Both types are easy to use and provide a straight-back and straight-through stroke.

The price of a putter can range from $15 to $500. When selecting a putter, it’s not the price that should drive your decision. You can spend hundreds on a putter and if it doesn’t feel right with your stroke, you will have wasted a lot of money. Find the best putter for you through feel and practice, and then look at the price tag.

Should You Buy Used Golf Clubs?

Equipment, Tips & Advice No Comments »

If you are new to the game of golf, on a budget, or you just don’t play much, you will want to consider buying a used set of golf clubs. In a lot of cases, people selling their old clubs aren’t selling them because they are bad clubs that caused them to go 20 over par every game. They are typically selling them because they have either given up the game or have upgraded their clubs to another, more expensive set. But, just like buying anything that another person has used for a while, you should take a good look at the used set before coming up with the cash. This article will give you a few hints about what to look for when considering a used set of golf clubs.

First, do some research. When playing at your local course, try to rent different brands of clubs from time to time. Look in golf publications for reviews on various clubs to see what the pro’s recommend.

Don’t buy a set of clubs sight unseen, unless you have a pretty good sense of what you are getting. Online auction sites like eBay have lots of golf club sellers. Certainly, if the price and the brand are right, bid for the clubs. But most times, you will want to touch and feel the clubs before you purchase them.

When you find a set of used clubs you think you will like, make sure they are in good condition. Check out the clubheads and take a look at the grooves and how much wear they seem to have endured. You don’t want to buy a set of clubs that have faded grooves or dents. Check every club, not just the ones you think you will use the most. Also check the grips and the shafts. Make sure they aren’t too worn, bent or cracked.

If the seller agrees, ask if you can take the clubs out for a spin. The only way to know if you fit with this set of clubs will be to play with them.

Getting a set of clubs is an exciting time – even if a used set is old to someone else, they will be new to you. Have fun with your set!

Getting Custom Fitted For Golf Clubs

Equipment, Tips & Advice No Comments »

If you have become a more experienced golfer, and have the money to spend, a custom-fitted set of clubs may be the next step in perfecting your game. There are many manufacturers and golf specialty stores that offer custom golf clubs and you will have many choices if this is the route you choose to go. This article will give you some information on what a custom fitted set of golf clubs will provide.

First, you can select your own club head design. If you have played for a while, you will sense what style of head design fits you best. There are many options, including oversize, traditional, offset, lower center of gravity and toe-heel weighted club heads. There are also, of course, choices in material, from stainless steel to wood

You will also customize your club shafts. Graphite will give you more flexibility, while steel is designed for players looking for more distance and less accuracy.

Your club head speed will be next. If you have a very fast swing, you will want an extra stiff shaft. If your swing is smoother, a regular flex will be best. Most custom fitters will provide you with a grid of miles per hour, so you can determine the best club head speed for you.

Depending on your height, the custom clubs will have varying shaft lengths. A shaft length that matches your height will allow you more comfort.

Last but not least, the grip. The grip size of your club is an extremely important factor in a custom built set of clubs. An incorrect grip size will cause you to strike the ball everywhere except at the proper place of contact. A proper grip will greatly improve your game.

Golf clubs are a very personal choice, and should fit each player. While custom clubs are expensive, you may want to make the investment, especially if you are become more dedicated to the game.

Dressing for a Round of Golf

Apparel, Tips & Advice No Comments »

Whether you are new to the game or have been playing for years, you know that playing the game of golf is as much about appearance as it is what par you make on the fourteenth hole. Golf has traditionally been known as a sport of prestige, and even if your annual salary doesn’t even come close to what Tiger Woods earns in one tournament, you should look the part when you come to the course. Golf is a professional engagement, particularly if you are playing as part of a business situation. So show up looking presentable!

Most private country clubs have a dress code that usually requires men or women to wear a golf shirt with a collar. Sticking to a brand name golf shirt, like Ping, Nike, Ashworth or Greg Norman are safe bets. Shorts are acceptable, but they should be designed for golf with a longer inseam instead of gym shorts. They should fall just above your knees. Denim is not usually acceptable.

Wear shoes specifically for the game, not sneakers and especially not sandals. Bring a pair of street shoes to change into when you are done playing, as golf shoes have spikes on the soles and are usually not good for walking around the clubhouse after play.

It’s a good idea to wear a hat or a visor. Either will help keep the sun off your face and out of your eyes. Greg Norman is famous for his straw hat!

Dressing the right way shows respect for the country club, other members and for the great game of golf.

Choosing A Good Pair of Golf Shoes

Apparel, Equipment No Comments »

Whether you are a beginner or experienced golfer, you will want to invest in a good pair of golf shoes. You can rent golf clubs and do pretty well, but your shoes are a very important part of your success as a golfer. If you’re walking an 18-hole course, you’ll be on your feet for 4-5 hours and will walk about 4 miles! A good pair of shoes will be a must. Here are some tips when selecting the best pair of shoes for you:

When you are trying on shoes, the fit around the middle of the shoe should be a bit tighter than your street shoes. You’ll get most support from this part of your foot when you are swinging your club, so this is the area that should be tightest in the shoe. Even if they feel a little too tight, they will stretch. It’s best to give your feet a lot of support in this area. Loose fitting shoes will cause your feet to slide and will cause you to lose stability in your swing.

Waterproof shoes are more expensive, but if you play in wet and muddy conditions, they will be worth the money. Leather uppers keep moisture out and offer the best support. Avoid synthetic leather shoes; they are not waterproof and don’t allow your feet to breathe.

Investing in a good pair of golf shoes will not only reduce the potential of sore feet at the nineteenth hole, but will also improve your game!
