Good Posture for a Good Golf Game
Fitness May 10th, 2007Take a quick look at the way you are sitting right now – are you sitting up straight with your neck high? Chances are the answer is ‘no’. While our parents drilled into us the importance of good posture, most of us never heeded their advice.
Good posture is the foundation for a good golf game. Those who have bad posture while sitting or walking run the risk of a bad stance while playing golf. Many doctors note that bad posture is the reason for many of the sports injuries they see every day. You can improve your game off the course by focusing on the way you stand, walk and sit in ‘real-life’.
Golf instructors all have different philosophies about how to teach the golf swing. But one thing is consistent; poor posture while swinging is a major factor in inconsistent golf play. You simply can’t have bad posture and expect to have a good golf game.
To improve your posture, keep it top of mind. When you are seated, always slide your bottom back in the chair until it touches the back of the seat. Your upper back should rest against the seat back and your feet should be flat on the floor. In your car, sit with this perfect posture, and then and only then, adjust your seat to reach the foot pedals.
Posture will, no doubt, be stressed as a fundamental by your instructors, as if there is one fundamental to golfing success, it is your posture.
