If you are just beginning to play the great game of golf, you may wonder whether or not you need lessons. Unless you were born with a natural ability, the answer is “Yes!” Taking golf lessons will give you a great start to the game; you’ll learn the proper way to play and build a terrific foundation for the future. Even the greatest players took golf lessons when they began, and still take advanced lessons now to hone their game.

When you are looking for a place to provide you with some golf lessons, start at your local country clubs or golf courses. Give them a call, or stop in, and ask about their lessons, the qualifications of their instructors and the prices.

Most courses will offer a couple of lesson options, based on your needs and pocketbook. The first option is individual lessons. This private one-on-one instruction is the most expensive, but also the best chance for you to receive the attention you need when you start playing the game. You can usually get these lessons in ½ hour increments, and discounts are sometimes given if you sign up for a package of lessons when you enroll.

The next option is group lessons. You’ll be with other people, usually in a group of two to five other beginners, and the instructor will focus more on group instruction. This is also a good option, as you will not only learn from the instructor, but you will also see what you should (and shouldn’t) do from other new players. It’s also less expensive than individual lessons.

When you take lessons, you will learn the rules of the game, golf etiquette, your stance and posture, teeing off, keeping your eye on the ball, putting, and other fundamentals of golf. Lessons are well worth the upfront investment and a must for every new golfer!
