Basic Explanation of Golf Club Irons
Golf Basics April 29th, 2007In addition to the woods and putter, a standard set of golf clubs also includes eight irons – the 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and putting wedge (PW).
Irons are used when the golfer is 200 yards or less from the green. Irons allow you to get away from the fairway and closer to the green, although some golfers also use and iron to tee off, especially for holes with a lower par.
Irons have thin grooves on the face of the club, which allow for different lofts. Many golfers are changing to a modified standard golf set that replaces the 3 and 4 iron with higher lofted woods like the 7 and 9 woods. The higher lofted woods are easier for some golfers to hit than a 3 or 4 iron and usually provide the same distance.
