Honda Classic Receives New Home…Again
PGA March 7th, 2006It was announced today that the annual Honda Classic that is commonly held in Mirasol was being relocated to PGA National starting next year.
The six year deal involves the Honda Classic leading the first of four events to be held in Florida. This announcement was released in the anticipation of this year’s Honda Classic set to begin on March 9, 2006.
With the Children’s Healthcare Charity overseeing the event next year, the Honda Classic will have a home for the next five years. The Honda Classic has had quite a bit of problems surrounding it - the tournament has been moved over six times from different golf courses. A second problem surrounding the tournament is its lack of popularity. Teeing off on March 9 will be “only four of the top 22 players with none higher than No. 8 David Toms”. A third problem surrounding the Honda Classic is the actual course played by the golfers.
In the past two years, many of them have openly voiced their dislike for the Sunrise course in Mirasol. The shaved sloped course twists and turns through marshland and trees, and the ninth green is located 2 1/2 miles from the start. Therefore, it is not possible to see the clubhouse after teeing on No. 1 until putting out on No. 18.
With a course designed this way, many of the golfers will be looking forward to the Honda Classic’s new home in 2007.

I am sure this will help get more of the big names back but it is nice to have the others get a chance at the exposure.
