The Women’s World Cup was held in South Africa this past weekend, and (surprise, surprise) Annika Sorenstam’s Swedish team won by three strokes. Her playing partner for the 3-day event was Liselotte Neumann, a veteran LPGA golfer. Golf being a game of inevitable ups and downs, team events are often decided by one member coming to the rescue when her teammate falls apart. This was certainly the case in this year’s World Cup.

The Swedish team led the event from the start, but disaster loomed when Neumann’s game deserted her on the back nine at Gary Player Country Club in Sun City. She bogeyed holes 11, 12, and 13, opening the door for the second-place finishers (Scotland) to make a move to overtake them. But Sorenstam would have none of that. She promptly eagled the par-5 14th hole, giving Sweden a comfortable lead once again.

After it was all over, a visibly relieved Neumann said:

I was struggling there with my bogeys at 11, 12 and 13 and it was really important when Annika eagled 14. That gave us some breathing room again.
