Pro Putting at the Mercedes
PGA January 7th, 2006I spent a couple hours yesterday watching the PGA Mercedes Championship. One of the first things I noticed was how large some of the greens are on the Plantation Course in Maui, Hawaii.
The good thing about larger greens is that it’s easier for those pros to get their ball on the green - given such a large target.
The bad thing is it makes for some pretty long putts.
Watching the pros putting some of those long putts was absolutely amazing. Their ability to read a long putt on a green with numerous undulations was uncanny.
I’ve heard the saying “Drive for Show, Putt for Dough”. The truth of the saying was very evident during yesterday’s round. These guys can read their putts, and gauge their distances remarkably. It’s reinforced my desire to improve my putting and take a few strokes off my game.
If you haven’t taken a moment to watch these guys at work, I encourage you to do so. They are impressive.

So true. Watching the touch it takes to putt those greens is awesome. Short game in general in this tournament is great to watch.

Watching the pros putt on those ridiculously impossible greens should be enough to inspire all of us recreational golfers to give up some of the time spent at the practice range and instead devote that time to praticing our putting.
