John Daly Needs His Mental Game
General News January 27th, 2006The somewhat colorful life of John Daly has taken yet one more twist. While playing in the Buick Invitational, he was advised that his wife was being taken to prison to serve a 5 month sentence for involvement in a drug ring and an illegal gambling operation.
Daly indicated he had not been advised that the sentence would begin, and if he had known, he would have withdrawn from the tournament. After yesterday’s round, he was shooting under par at 69. When asked how he could separate the current events in his personal life from his game, he offered a half-hearted grin and said, “You don’t, I’m just out here.” Daly admitted frustration with the prosecuting attorney’s office for not providing sufficient notification. He is out of town on tour, and the couple has a two-year old son, and Sherrie, his wife, has a son from a previous marriage. With no time to prepare and Daly on tour, he had some major arrangements to make for the care of the children.
Even under the best circumstances, it’s tough to hold onto a good mental game. I expect to see John smoking a few more cigarettes than normal, but believe he will make the extra effort to keep a level head and be a contender. He won the Buick two years ago, and it’s definitely a victory he’d like to repeat.
