Appleby Wins the Mercedes Championship
PGA January 9th, 2006Australian Stuart Appleby was successful in winning the PGA Tour’s Mercedes Championship three years in a row. The last player to win this tournament three years in a row was Gene Littler from 1955-1957.
Appleby is quoted as saying, “This one was the hardest. The course was the hardest. There really wasn’t any momentum this week because it was so tough. Winning is awesome, but three times is a dream come true, ” he said.
Even with the strong winds, Appleby was able to make a three-foot birdie putt on the first hole of a playoff to beat Vijay Singh, who had tied with Appleby at 8-under-par through 72 regulation holes. However, Singh was not successful with the 8-foot birdie attempt, and Appleby was declared after making the putt.
Appleby will go down in history as one of only 15 golfers, such as Tiger Woods at the Bay Hill Invitational, who has won a PGA tour event three times in a row.
