ABC To Cancel PGA Tour Contract?
PGA January 3rd, 2006According to an unnamed source in an article appearing on usatoday.com, ABC stated that it has lost money on golf and has not signed up to be part of the PGA tour new television contract for next year, when the tour’s contract expires at the end of this year.
This will leave the two other major networks, NBC Sports and CBS Sports, to broadcast PGA tour events.
However, until the tour’s contract has been made final, the spokesman for ABC, Mark Mandel, declined to comment.
Paul Azinger had this to say about the rumor that ABC will not continue with the PGA tour:
“I’m highly disappointed, for a lot of people. Not for me, because I have a golf career. I’m disappointed for all the people behind the scenes that you’re never going to see or hear of. I feel bad for Mark Loomis, too. He took a big chance with Faldo and me, and it worked. Unfortunately, the network was unwilling to write the check, ” Azinger stated.

“Cancel”ing would imply that they’re pulling out of a contract. They’re simply not agreeing to the terms of the NEXT contract.

Yeah, I read that story. It’s sad to hear that golf is down to two major television networks. Hopefully there will be other channels that pick up the games. If not, where is the sport going to get its much needed boost in popularity?
