What to Look for in a Driver
Equipment December 19th, 2005With so many types of drivers available now, it’s no wonder people are uncertain and confused when shopping for a new one. Oversized drivers are the current trend, and why not? They have a larger sweet spot, but amazingly they are very light. They all have a larger head, so how do you pick the right one?
I suggest you take the following into account:
Shaft: The amount of flexibility desired in the shaft varies from golfer to golfer. Choose a driver with a shaft that you are accustomed to using. A new driver will take some getting used to, let the shaft be your familiar point.
Loft: The new oversized drivers vary in degree of loft. The larger head and sweet spot will help to consistently hit the ball. Go with a 10.5 or 11 degree loft to produce a solid long drive that doesn’t go too high and get hung up in the wind.
Length: This one can be figured scientifically by measurement. This is particularly important if you are having your driver custom made. I’ve found, though, that the best length for me is slightly longer than what is recommended based on my height. So, as a taller woman, I bought a man’s driver. It works well for me, and I feel comfortable swinging it.
Don’t forget that any time you’re using an unfamiliar club, it’s going to take time to adapt to it. Don’t expect miracles overnight!
