For a third time in a row, Annika Sorenstam has been awarded the AP Female Athlete of the Year Award. She was the first woman to win the first two components of the women’s Grand Slam, and she has won 10 times on the LPGA Tour.

Being awarded the AP Female Athlete of the Year award puts her in same position as Babe Zacharias who won the title three years in a row and six times overall.

Sorenstam received more than half of the 81 votes needed to be chosen AP Female Athlete of the Year Award. She began by winning her first three tournaments and then went on to win six of the eight tournaments she’s played in.

However, while playing in Denver, she failed to get the coveted Grand Slam after a three-putt bogey and a four-putt bogey occurred in the third round.

With a scoring average of 69.33 and 10 LPGA victories under her belt, Sorenstam has become the first LPGA player to win all major awards such as the money title, player of the year, and the Vare Trophy, five years in a row. Therefore, it can be seen why Sorenstam received so many votes by the AP newspaper and broadcast members.
