61st LPGA U.S. Women’s Open
LPGA December 13th, 2005If you’ve always wanted to see Newport, RI, then 2006 might be the perfect time to do it. The LPGA will hold the 61st U.S. Women’s Open (June 26-July 2) at Rhode Island’s historic Newport Country Club, more than one hundred years after it hosted the first U.S. Open. Tournament attendees will get a chance to see not only one of America’s premier golf tournaments but also one of its best vacation spots.
The City by the Sea offers visitors plenty of fun and sun. In addition to being home to the Tennis Hall of Fame, Newport features an abundance of cultural and historic attractions, great restaurants, like The White Horse Tavern, a fantastic night life, relaxing beaches, interesting walking tours, cool breezes, and miles and miles of scenic coastline ideal for fun-filled sailing excursions. And let’s not forget the Newport Mansions, once the vacation homes for bluebloods like the Astors, the Belmonts, and the Vanderbilts .
The Newport Country Club has its own heritage. Founded in 1894, it is one of the original five founding member clubs of the USGA. The course was designed by William Davis, and was remodeled in 1924 by A.W. Tillinghast. It was the site of the 1895 U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur, won by Horace Rawlins, and Charles Macdonald respectively, and the 1995 U.S. Amateur, won by Tiger Woods. Architect Ron Forse completed some restoration work on the golf course since this last USGA championship
