Golf: Playing the Game for Fun
Articles November 1st, 2005What makes the game of golf so fun? This is a common question among inexperienced golfers and their loved ones. For those who have played the game, the answer is simple. Of course, it isn’t the thrill of chasing a ball around the green, it is the physical ability of the player combined with his/her intellect. Physically, it warms one’s muscles and creates a heart-pumping level of excitement. Some people compare it to a long-range game of basketball. Mentally, the game of golf is compared to the game of chess. The real enjoyment begins with the challenge.
Professional Golf
Professionals, like Tiger Woods, take the game of golf seriously–not to mention the level of prestige and volume of money won. How well one does earns them a place in society that most dream of, but can’t be matched by the average golfer.
Non-Professional Golf
Those of us that aren’t interested in going ‘pro’ enjoy the game strictly for the challenge. Completing an 18-hole course in less time than the last time it was played or achieving a ‘hole-in-one’ seems to have a hidden purpose. Many golfers find that playing the game relaxing. This is not only a physically sound notion, but a mentally sound notion as well.
People who truly enjoy the game of golf will spend a day on the course no matter what the weather. Many golfers have to be chanced off the green because of bad weather, as if they don’t have common sense to come out of the storm. It doesn’t matter how hot or how cool the temperatures, a true golfer will endure the elements to play a good game.
A perfect day for golf would entail a nice, sunny day. It would include a comfortable temperature and light winds or no wind at all. If you throw in freshly cut grass, giving the feeling of a soft green beneath the feet, it would be a perfect physical recipe for relaxation. When setting up for a golf swing, silence and stillness are lent to the golfer so that he may concentrate on his connection with the ball. These same characteristics are mentally valuable as well.
Golf offers so much more than fun. Ask any doctor, “What is the best physical activity to eliminate anxiety?” He’ll immediately refer you to the game of golf.
Unlike man-made colors, golf entails the colors of nature. It is a scientific fact that the green of the grass, the light blue of the sky and the possible puffy white of the clouds are soothing colors to the human eye. Because of the way that light is reflected by these colors, it allows the mind to ‘calm’. Furthermore, the human silence and the sounds of nature compound the ability for concentration and relaxation. So remember, the next time you are feeling stressed and a little uptight, maybe you should grab a golf club and get back in touch with nature.

When I first started I found it was the only thing I could do to relax before and after a projective geometry test and. Now I find there is just so much pleasure being out on the course at Harbor Hills early or late. It seems to be such a relaxing time and some times not.
