Fourteen-In-One Universal Golf Club
Equipment October 21st, 2005
Would you trade in all of your irons for a single universal? Probably not, but a new American-made Universal golf club could make it possible. The manufacturers boast that the club is perfect for golf players who want more flexibility when they play, or for beginners who want to try out golf without having to buy a full set. Apparently, the club allows you to choose every club from a 1-iron to a wedge. It can even be adjusted to use as a putter!
The lie of the club also changes as you adjust the loft, so you really do get all the advantages of a full golf set in one club, which makes it perfect for practising or playing wherever you are.
What they conveniently leave out is that the length of the club, which accounts for much of the distance judgment when choosing which club to use, remains unchanged through the adjustments.
The nearest modern device I’ve seen to this is one I reviewed some 10 years ago that had a selection of four head options, (driver, putter, mid and short iron) which screwed into a three-piece steel shaft, and came complete with a shoulder satchel the size of a small camera bag.
Complete with its anti-loosening thread to keep the heads firmly in place through the golf swing, it was a heavy piece of kit to play but I once managed to play to my regular ten handicap during one 18-hole test session.
Regardless of its faults, I still think it could be convenient to carry around in case you’re caught without your full set when you get the urge to practice.
