A story just came in at Yahoo News that the Grand Slam of Golf, which has been played in Kauai Hawaii since 1991, may be relocating in the future. The plan is to allow other cities to get a piece of the action.

A number of locations, including Las Vegas and the Caribbean, have expressed interest in hosting the tournament, “but at this stage, we’re not ready to discuss 2006,” Mason said.

Kauia generates a relatively large amount of revenue from this event, the only major sporting event they get to host.

“Certainly we don’t want to lose the Grand Slam, but the other side of it is, we can’t afford a $5 million Grand Slam,” said Rex Johnson, president and chief executive of the Hawaii Tourism Authority. “We’re not going to get into a bidding war with other areas over the Grand Slam.”

I think that a hosted model for the Grand Slam is a good idea. It has always worked for other sporting events which include the Final Four, the Super Bowl, the Olympics and more. While this is a bad deal for the city of Kauai, it is undoubtedly a good deal for many fans that otherwise would never get a chance to attend the event.

I wonder what the pro golfers think of this… Hawaii is a pretty nice place to play golf.
